Cafe Manager Role

We are excited to share that as part of our plans we will be recruiting a Cafe Manager who is passionate about providing an excellent customer experience in our ‘to be built’ cafe, which will sell a selection of hot and cold refreshments, from our Heavitree Park, Exeter location.

Initially, the role will entail the setting up of a new team to deliver a cafe service and will then be very much part of delivering our vision when the cafe opens in July 2021. Supported by a Board who have expertise in Finance, Marketing, HR, Commercial, Building & Design who work closely with Park Life Trustees, the Cafe Manager will have a fantastic opportunity to
shape the service that will be offered to our community.

We are looking for someone who has strong hospitality experience, is capable of supervising a small team and is committed to producing great food and drinks for our local community and beyond!

Location – Park Life Heavitree Cafe in Heavitree Exeter

Salary – circa £26,000

Hours per week – 40 to be covered between our opening hours of 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 10pm Thursday to Saturday, in conjunction with other colleagues

Reports to – Park Life Café Board of Directors

Main Duties of the Role

  • Delivery of key performance indicators related to the cafe management
  • Achieve the business plan through effective stock control, waste management, labour scheduling, marketing and upselling
  • Support income generation for the charity, liaising with the Board of Directors and Park Life Trustees
  • Manage suppliers to ensure the highest product quality and value for money
  • Create, review and revise menus to maximise profits
  • Adhere to financial processes and procedures
  • Manage customer complaints process
  • Lead and empower a small team of Cafe Assistants / Baristas to deliver an outstanding cafe experience in a newly built community cafe
  • In conjunction with the Cafe Board, recruit, develop and manage the operational team to deliver exceptional standards, ensuring appropriate staffing in line with operational needs and budgets
  • Responsible lead for safety within the cafe, including maintaining high levels of food hygiene, cleanliness and risk assessments
  • Support safe and secure operation of the building
  • Work alongside Park Life community team members to ensure successful use of the facilities that meet Park Life vision, aims and objectives

Person Specification

All are essential and are marked with a ‘D’ if desirable

Qualifications / training;

  • Good standard of education
  • NVQ in hospitality services
  • Food Hygiene certificate at level 3
  • First Aid at work certificate (D)

Experience of;

  • customer focussed service within a hospitality setting, including the ability to create and produce high standards of food and drinks (including Barista training)
  • previous experience of cafe management
  • cash handling and experience of accounting systems such as Goodtill
  • completing and overseeing daily and weekly checks
  • managing stock levels and placing orders
  • working within the charity sector / community setting (D)


  • Excellent communication skills
  • Numerate and literate
  • Ability to self manage
  • Supervision of a small team
  • High levels of organisation and accuracy
  • Identification and delivery of service improvements
  • Business acumen, with working knowledge of hospitality
  • Able to think creatively and passionately about the service as part of a community centered offering

NB – This role will be subject to a basic DBS check

The park is located in Heavitree, if driving by car from the city centre travel along Heavitree Road and onto Fore Street, turning left at Whipton Lane. The park can be reached by foot or bicycle from entrances at Whipton Lane, Roseland Avenue, South Lawn Terrace and Nicholas Avenue.
